3Fine cooking, but poor oven door design
By Phillip Kamm
The cooking functions of this range are just fine, but there are some issues which do warrant mentioning, so these have knocked a couple of stars off of the rating.

From previous reviews of other GE ranges, I had anticipated the odiferous burn off of the factory coating of the heating elements in this range. I still was surprised by the amount of time that it took for the acrid fumes to become unnoticeable, even though we ran an exhaust hood above the range full blast for about 2 hours during the burn-off phase.

More importantly, there is a very significant design flaw related to how the exterior stainless steel cladding on the lower oven door is attached. The cladding goes down to the bottom of the door and DOES NOT wrap around to the underside of the door. This leaves a sharp corner of sheathing material which is exposed at each bottom corner of the door. It took only a couple of weeks for me to snag one of these corners with an irregularity of a shoe surface (or perhaps a small exposed edge of sole) as I was turning away from the range. This has pulled the cladding away from the metal frame underneath, and now that corner of the stainless steel sheath has been bent slightly away from the door frame. It takes little imagination to see where this is going--now that the initial insult has occurred, the corner will become progressively easier to snag, and the stainless steel surface sheathing panel will become progressively more bent away from the frame. This will be not only unsightly (certainly not what one expects after just having laid down $1200 for a brand new appliance), but will actually pose a safety hazard in the form of tripping and falls.

We have had other appliances, of course--and the cladding of doors on all of them, without exception, wraps around to the underside of the bottom of the doors. GE's design engineers really dropped the ball on this one--they were either unconscionably thoughtless or chose to save a few pennies in material and manufacturing cost per unit. Now the dealer is giving us a hard time about this problem not being a "defect in workmanship" and thereby covered by the warranty. (That would seem to apply only if you do not consider the design process to be part of the production of an item.)

Conclusion: DO NOT buy this range if your kitchen countertop is not deep enough for the front edge to be flush with the front edge of the range. If the range sticks out a couple of inches beyond the edge of your countertop, as does ours, then BEWARE!
